How Often Should I Get a Diabetic Eye Exam?

Most patients with diabetes should have a comprehensive eye exam annually. Depending on your unique needs or medical history, we may recommend more frequent visits.

If you’re newly diagnosed or haven’t had an eye exam recently, it’s a good idea to schedule one soon. Early baseline exams give us a clearer picture moving forward.

Understanding Diabetic Eye Disease

Living with diabetes means staying on top of your overall health, including your eyes. 2 of the most common vision complications linked to diabetes are diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema (DME).

  • Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the small blood vessels in the retina, the part of your eye that detects light and sends signals to your brain. Over time, these damaged vessels can leak fluid or bleed, leading to blurry vision, floaters, or even vision loss if left untreated.
  • Diabetic macular edema is a more advanced stage of retinopathy. It happens when fluid builds up in the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. This swelling can make it difficult to read, drive, or see faces clearly.

Both conditions often develop without early warning signs. That’s why regular diabetic eye exams are essential, even if your vision feels fine. Early detection and timely treatment can help protect your sight and preserve your quality of life.

What to Expect During Your Diabetic Eye Exam

Your visit will start with a warm welcome and a conversation about your vision, lifestyle, and overall health history. We’ll check your visual acuity and take a close look at the internal structures of your eyes using diagnostic tools like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus photography.

Depending on your needs, your pupils may be gently dilated to give us a better view of the retina. The exam is comfortable and straightforward, and we’ll always explain what we’re doing and why. If we find anything that needs follow-up, we’ll guide you through your options in clear, simple terms.

Our Technology

During your diabetic eye exam, we’ll use the following diagnostic tools to get a deeper look at your eye health, gently and comfortably.

  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) allows us to view the layers of your retina (the back of your eye) in high detail. It’s completely painless and helps us detect tiny changes that may not be visible through standard exams.
  • Fundus photography captures high-resolution images of your retina (the back of your eye). These photos provide a visual record that we can use to track changes over time. It’s a quick, noninvasive way to support long-term monitoring and personalized care.
